ACCEPTABLE SPECIMENS INCLUDE: CSF, synovial fluid, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid, peritoneal fluid, ascites fluid, amniotic fluid, tympanocentesis fluid, vitreal fluid, and bone marrow. All specimens should be sent in a sterile, leak-proof container, EXCEPT bone marrow which should be sent in an isolator tube (please see "AFB Culture and Smear - Blood and Bone Marrow" procedure).
Sterile body fluids DO NOT include fluids such as exudate/drainage/pus from unsterile sites such as wounds or abscesses; to submit specimens such as these, please refer to the "Culture Wound, Deep" procedure.
Send to the lab immediately at room temperature
Specimens stable up to 1 hour after collection
Specimens should NOT be sent on swabs. Specimens should not be refrigerated. Specimens should not be submitted in blood culture bottles. Specimens should not be sent in tubes containing preservatives such as heparin.
