Urine Culture

  • LIS Mnemonic: CU

    Collect

Urine must be collected in a sterile, leak-proof container or in a grey-topped preservative tube.

*Urine sent in a grey-topped preservative tube MUST have at least 3 mLs of specimen in order to maintain the proper preservative-to-urine ratio. Short draws in this tube- resulting in a high preservative-to-urine ratio- can interfere with culture results. If 3 mLs cannot be obtained, the specimen must be sent (optimally on ice) in a sterile, leak-proof container.

-Grey-topped tubes are stable for up to 48 hours after collection.
-Specimens sent at ROOM TEMPERATURE MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE LAB WITHIN 20 MINUTES OF COLLECTION.
-Specimens submitted on ice should be delivered to the lab as soon as possible, optimally within 2 hours of collection.

    Volume Required

Grey-topped tube: 3-4 mLs; Sterile container: 1 mL

    Minimum Required

Grey-topped tube: 3 mLs; Sterile container: 0.5 mL

    Transport

    Send to the lab immediately

    Stability

    Please refer to "Collect" above

    Unacceptable conditions

Bagged specimens are not sterile and will not be accepted for this culture. Specimens sent in a sterile, leak-proof container NOT on ice received in the lab >20 minutes after collection they will be considered compromised and will be rejected.
