Wound Culture

    Collect

    ACCEPTABLE SPECIMENS INCLUDE: tissue, pus, or deep wound material.

    Pus collected in a syringe or sterile, leak-proof container provides maximal yield.

    If swabs are collected, ensure a double swab culture set is submitted.

    Tissues should be sent in a sterile leak-proof container wrapped in moist, sterile gauze.

    Volume Required

    1 mL of pus; 1 double swab culture set

    Minimum Required

    1 mL of pus; 1 double swab culture set

    Transport

    Send to the lab immediately at room temperature

    Stability

    Tissue and fluid specimens must be received in the lab within 30 minutes of collection. Swab specimens are stable up to 2 hours after collection.

    Unacceptable conditions

    Specimens should not be refrigerated. Specimens collected via syringe must have needle removed before sending to the laboratory. Do not send tissues in formalin. Swabs submitted for this culture are not acceptable for anaerobic culture.
