Fecal Leukocytes (Stool Smear for WBC)

    Collect

    Stool specimen collected in enteric transport media (ETM) or a sterile, leak-proof OR rectal specimen collected via double swab culture set.

    Specimens should be collected and transported to the lab as soon as possible to prevent leukocyte lysis in the sample and to ensure accurate test results.

    Volume Required

    1 mL of stool; 1 double swab culture set

    Minimum Required

    0.5 mL of stool; 1 double swab culture set

    Transport

    Send to the lab immediately at room temperature

    Stability

    Unpreserved stool specimens must be received within 30min of collection; swab specimens stable up to 2hrs after collection; stool specimens in ETM may be received 72hrs after collection.

    Unacceptable conditions

    Specimens should not be refrigerated. Diapers containing stool are not acceptable specimens.
