Mycoplasma pneumoniae PCR

    Collect

    ACCEPTABLE SPECIMENS INCLUDE: bronchial lavage (BAL), nasopharyngeal aspirate, sputum, throat swab, ear swab [ALL SHOULD BE SENT IN VIRAL TRANSPORT MEDIA]

    Sterile Body Fluids: CSF, pleural fluid, joint fluid, pericardial fluid, tympanocentesis fluid [SHOULD NOT BE SENT IN VIRAL TRANSPORT MEDIA]

    Specimens should be collected and transported to the lab as soon as possible to ensure stability of nucleic acids in the sample and to ensure accurate test results.

    Volume Required

    1-5 mLs of fluid; 1 swab sent in viral transport media

    Minimum Required

    1 mL of fluid; 1 swab sent in viral transport media

    Transport

    Send to the lab immediately, optimally on ice. If transport is delayed greater than 30 minutes, freeze specimen and send on ice. Specimens must be received by 7 A.M. for same-day result.

    Stability

    If unable to send to the lab within 30 minutes of collection, specimen must be frozen and sent on ice.

    Unacceptable conditions

    Blood, bone marrow, tissue, and biopsy specimens are not acceptable for this test.
