Gram Stain

    Collect

    ACCEPTABLE SPECIMENS INCLUDE: tissue, pus or deep wound material, sinus aspirate, dialysis fluid, sputum, tracheal aspirate, bronchoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage, non-bronchoscopic BAL, penis, urethral, vaginal, cervical, oral, urine. All specimens must be collected in a sterile, leak-proof container or syringe OR via double swab culture set.

    Tissues should be sent in a sterile, leak-proof container wrapped in moist, sterile gauze.

    For special stains for stool specimens, please refer to the "Eosinophil Stain" and "Fecal Leukocyte" procedures.

    Volume Required

    1 mL of fluid; 1 double swab culture set

    Minimum Required

    1 mL of fluid; 1 double swab culture set

    Transport

    Send to the lab immediately at room temperature

    Stability

    Tissue and fluid specimens should be received in the lab within 30 minutes of collection. Swab specimens are stable up to 2 hours after collection.
