Ova and Parasite Examination

    Collect

    ACCEPTABLE SPECIMENS INCLUDE: Stool, colonic aspirate, duodenal aspirate (collected in O&P vials OR a sterile, leak-proof container) OR urine (collected in a sterile, leak-proof container).

    Add stool to the "Fill to Here" line on O&P vials.

    Volume Required

    5 mLs of stool or colonic/duodenal aspirate; 5 mLs of urine

    Minimum Required

    5 mLs of stool or colonic/duodenal aspirate; 5 mLs of urine

    Transport

    Send to the lab immediately at room temperature

    Stability

    Unpreserved stool must be received in the lab within 30min of collection. Specimens sent in O&P vials may be received in the lab up to 2 weeks after collection. Urine stable at room temp for 24hrs.

    Unacceptable conditions

    Ova and Parasite testing cannot be performed if the patient has had a barium enema during the last 7-10 days. Specimens should not be refrigerated or frozen. Specimens sent on swabs or in diapers will not be accepted.
