Gastrointestinal Culture

    Collect

    Stool or colonic aspirate submitted in a sterile, leak-proof container or in enteric transport media (ETM).

    Specimens should not be submitted on inpatients who have been in the hospital for >4 days.

    Rectals swabs should only be submitted on patients <2 years of age if a stool specimen is unable to be obtained.

    Volume Required

    5 mL in ETM or 1 mL in sterile container; <2 yrs: 1 double swab culture set

    Minimum Required

    5 mL in ETM or 1 mL in sterile container; <2 yrs: 1 double swab culture set

    Transport

    Send to the lab immediately at room temperature

    Stability

    Unpreserved specimens must be received in the lab within 30 minutes of collection. Specimens sent in ETM may be received in the lab up to 72 hours after collection.

    Processing

    Stool specimens are routinely cultured for: Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, Yersinia, Aeromonas, and E.coli 0157:H7. Enterohemorrhagic E.coli toxin testing is performed on all stool specimens. For detection of Vibrio species or Plesiomonas, please contact the lab for more information (x42330 or 215-590-2331).

    Unacceptable conditions

    Specimens should not be refrigerated or frozen. Diapers containing stool are not acceptable specimens.
